If you find yourself in a workout rut, give these 5 tips a try to stay motivated to exercise. I’m sure these tips will help motivate you to lace up those shoes and get moving.
In an exercise rut? I hear ya, we all get stuck there every once in a while. Right now I’m in the middle of training for a marathon. In these weeks leading up to the marathon, the mileage is increasing, which takes more time out of my busy schedule. I don’t want to do it. 18 miles on a Saturday? I could find a dozen other things I’d rather be doing.
But if I miss that long run on the weekend? I’m setting myself up for failure in the marathon. I need to stay motivated to exercise in order to not get injured, perform well and stay fit for the race. I have been finding ways to keep myself motivated to run, so I thought I’d share them with you. Because who knows, maybe they’ll help you, too.
If you are lacking in the motivation department, here are 5 tips to stay motivated to exercise:
1. Switch up your routine
If you have been doing the same workout or exercise for a few weeks or longer, choose something different to do. This not only will be good for your body (by working out different muscle groups), but can bring new light and energy to your workout routine. Pick an activity you really enjoy doing, or something you haven’t tried before but are interested in.
2. Find a workout buddy
Exercising with a family member, friend or neighbor is a great way to stay motivated. When you have someone counting on you to exercise with them, it’s more likely you won’t skip out on your workout.
3. Listen to music, an audiobook or a podcast
Turn up the beat! Listening to music is a great way to instantly help you get going. Moving along to the rhythm could be what you’re missing in your workouts. If you don’t like listening to music while you exercise, try turning on an audiobook or your favorite podcast. This can help take your mind off things and help you get moving.

If you enjoy running or biking, sign up for a race. Want to be able to swim a certain distance without stopping or do that difficult yoga pose? Set a SMART goal to help you focus in on it. Maybe you like doing workout videos at home. There are a number of programs that run for a certain length of time (15, 30, or 60 days and beyond) you can purchase or stream online and follow along, achieving results and a sense of satisfaction when you complete the program. Whatever you enjoy doing, set a goal to help push you to get moving.
5. Put it on your calendar
Scheduling exercise into your calendar will help ensure you’ll get your workout in. Treat it like any other appointment or commitment you’ve penciled in. You’ve already made time for it, so you might as well exercise, right? When that exercise time slot is staring at you right from your calendar, get up and move! You’ll be glad you did, trust me.
