Smooth, rich and delicious healthy chocolate peanut butter truffles are perfect for the holidays or as a special treat any time of the year!
It’s no secret that I love peanut butter. That creamy, rich, nutty spread – one of my favorite foods! It becomes even better when paired with chocolate! (Honestly, what food doesn’t become better when paired with chocolate?)
Alas, I had to combine these two loves of mine once again in a winning combo. You can see my previous recipes with this combo in my Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins and my Chocolate Peanut Butter Dessert Hummus. This time: Chocolate Peanut Butter Truffles!
Making Healthy Chocolate Peanut Butter Truffles
I’m actually cheating a little bit with this recipe because I am using my Peanut Butter Energy Bites recipe and essentially just dipping them in chocolate. I first had the idea at Christmas time when my family and I were making treats to give to neighbors and friends. I love to make energy bites, and my peanut butter ones are super easy to make.
It was decided. I grabbed my double boiler and started melting some dark chocolate. A double boiler helps melt the chocolate evenly and keeps it hot (be careful – it can burn you!) so you can keep covering all your peanut butter balls without it cooling down. Just be careful to watch it and don’t let it burn. If you don’t have an official double boiler you can simply put a glass bowl over a boiling pot of water, too.
No need to fret if you don’t have a double boiler. You can simply use a glass bowl and your microwave. Melt it slowly in 30 second increments, stirring each time, until fully melted. One downfall of using the microwave is the chocolate will start to harden again, creating the need to re-microwave it as you are working to dip all the peanut butter balls in chocolate. The other downfall is that it is easier to burn the chocolate using a microwave.
Using chocolate dipping tools (affiliate link) makes the job SO much easier, too. I prefer using the spiral tool for this recipe. You can roll the balls around in the chocolate, then scoop them up and tap slightly on the edge of the pot to get excess chocolate off.
This recipe does take some time (about 30 minutes) because you first have to roll and make all the balls, then dip and cover each individually in chocolate. However, it is super easy to do – just takes time. Put some music on and enjoy it!
What makes these chocolate peanut butter truffles healthy?
Now I know what you’re thinking – chocolate is not healthy. I’ll just stop you right there. I LOVE chocolate, specifically dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has antioxidants in it that has been shown to benefit heart health. Just don’t binge on it and you’ll be good!
Because of that, these healthy chocolate peanut butter truffles are still classified as a dessert – but a healthier one. Inside there are flaxseeds which pack a punch of nutrition, including heart healthy fats, protein and fiber. I prefer to use Manitoba Smooth Milled Flaxseed (affiliate link). If you use code Manitoba25 at checkout on Amazon or directly through Manitoba’s website you can get 25% off your order!
Now of course, we can’t forget the star of the recipe – peanut butter!
I prefer to use natural peanut butter because there aren’t any added oils or sugars. Along with natural peanut butter I use peanut butter powder (affiliate link) to add more peanut butter flavor and protein, but also because it works great as a binder to hold everything together (along with the milled flaxseed).
These would be great for Christmas time, Valentine’s Day, Easter, bridal or baby showers, or any time you are wanting a fun and delicious treat. Let me know below what occasion you are enjoying these truffles for!

Description
Smooth, rich and delicious healthy chocolate peanut butter truffles are perfect for the holidays or as a special treat any time of the year!
Ingredients
- 1 cup natural peanut butter
- 1/2 cup peanut butter powder
- 1/2 cup ground flaxseed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup
- pinch of salt
- 3/4 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips (you may need more or less depending on how much chocolate stays on your truffles when dipping them).
Instructions
- Place all ingredients except the chocolate in a medium bowl; stir until well combined.
- Taking about 1 teaspoon at a time, roll mixture into balls.
- Heat the chocolate in a medium size double boiler. Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate in your microwave, 30 seconds at a time until just melted, then stir until fully melted.
- Roll/dip the peanut butter balls in the melted chocolate until full covered. Transfer to a baking sheet covered with aluminum foil, parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to allow to set. For quicker set up, place the baking sheet in the refrigerator.
- You can store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.
Notes
- I prefer using a double boiler, like this one (affiliate link), so the chocolate will stay melted and smooth (and not burnt) while I dip all of the peanut butter balls in the chocolate.
- I like to use these tools (affiliate link) – specifically the spiral one – to help with rolling and dipping the peanut butter balls in the chocolate.
