Think it’s impossible to make healthy choices while traveling? It seems like vacations have a way of thwarting all of your efforts to keeping your health on track. I don’t know about you, but when I travel it seems there is rarely any healthy food options to choose from, my daily schedule is so full there is no time to exercise, and hey, I am on vacation and that includes from being healthy, right? Well, I hate to break it to you, but vacations are not a good excuse to go hog-wild and forget all of your health goals. Don’t get me wrong, a few indulgences are allowed, but if you’re not careful traveling can keep you from reaching your health goals. When I travel I have to be creative in how to fit in exercise and choosing healthy food options. The keys to success are planning ahead and moderation. Let me share a few of my ideas for healthy travel tips below:
Look up the menu of the restaurant you’ll be going to and decide beforehand what you’ll order.
Stay hydrated with water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages or other high-calorie beverages.
Go for grilled, not fried.
Don’t opt for “super-size”, instead choose the small meal size.
Pack snack baggies of prepared fruits and veggies or order some as a side instead of fries or potatoes.
If your hotel has a fridge , buy your own food and keep it in there for healthier options such as milk for cereal, yogurt, fruit, or sandwich meat.

Share your meal at restaurants with a friend or family member for smaller portions.
Limit high fat condiments.
Make your own trail mix to take along with unsalted nuts, dried fruits, cheerios, or granola. The options are endless!
Walk it off and explore your travel destination on foot.
Schedule in time to make it to the hotel fitness room and don’t let any excuses stop you from making it.
Seek out and attend a local exercise class.
Choose your indulgences wisely – I like to pick that you-can-only-find-it-here local food and indulge on it for part of a meal. Skip the other stuff you can find in or around your hometown.
