This 4 ingredient Peppermint Hot Chocolate has a secret ingredient that makes it thick and creamy…and healthier than traditional homemade hot cocoa! It’s sure to hit the spot on a chilly winter day!
Happy Holidays, everyone! I hope you are all keeping warm in this cold weather! It’s Recipe ReDux time here on the blog and I decided to serve up a little something to keep you warm and toasty. This month’s theme was a fun one:
“Grab a Book & Cook – We’re playing a little party game at the end of 2016: Grab your nearest cookbook and ReDux the recipe on page 201, 16, 216 – or any combination of the number ‘2016.’”
Since it is the Christmas season, I decided to grab one of my Christmas cookbooks. I chose the Worldwide Ward Christmas Cookbook. I flipped through the pages, looking at some of my options and ended up on page 20 staring at a recipe for Christmas Night Cocoa. Sounded good to me on a cold winter’s day! Plus, I have been wanting to try something with homemade hot cocoa for a while…it must be a sign!
I switched up the recipe a bit by first making mine peppermint flavored! I omitted the vanilla extract from the original recipe and added some peppermint flavoring. I used peppermint essential oil, because I was out of peppermint extract and they were also out of it at the store! You could easily use peppermint extract instead of essential oil in this recipe.
Now to the secret ingredient that makes my hot cocoa different: yogurt. You read that right, I put yogurt in my hot chocolate. I used siggi’s yogurt, but any plain Greek yogurt would work just as well. The addition of yogurt makes it thick and creamy! SO Good! Not to mention the health benefits of yogurt, too!
One thing to note about using yogurt in cooking is you need to heat it up nice and slow, as yogurt can curdle pretty quickly if heated too quickly. So take your time heating it up. If you want it thicker and creamier, decrease the milk by 1/4 cup. If you like it less thick and creamy, but still like the addition of yogurt, increase the milk to 2 cups.
Easy, thick & creamy Peppermint Hot Chocolate...with a secret ingredient! Share on XAnd, of course, I used dark chocolate in my recipe. A healthy dose of antioxidants, plus it tastes yummy!
So there you have it. Four ingredients. One delicious and healthier peppermint hot chocolate. And, so easy to make! Now go enjoy. Merry Christmas!
