My 2015 “Winter” Race
Another one in the books! A week ago yesterday I ran the Dogtown Half Marathon in St. George, Utah. It was a beautiful day, perfect for running. The morning started out a little crisp, but I warmed up quickly once I started running. The course was slightly hilly, though mostly on a decline, and had the most gorgeous scenery. Seriously, it went by so fast because it was such a great run! The best part of finishing the race was having my family there at the finish line. I sure love them and I am glad they support me in my crazy running adventures!
Do you find yourself being less active during the winter months? I can relate! How do you keep yourself motivated and accountable to be active during the winter? My remedy: sign up for a winter race! I wasn’t too keen on some of the winter race series they have more locally…I have this fear I will slip, fall and injure myself if it is too slick or slippery outside. Treadmills are my lifesaver during the winter (it’s a love/hate relationship).
Funny enough, this “winter” here in Utah hasn’t been much of a winter at all. In fact, I could have run all the races in the winter series without the worry of snow or rain. Oh well, I found a great race that I will definitely be running again in the future! I was persuaded to run this particular “winter” race because some of my local running club members were running it and we had a club discount (bonus!)…besides, it was in sunny St. George during cold February!
So I decided to register…which meant I had to train (I’m accountable now!). I wanted to have a training regimen that was flexible but still held me accountable. I also wanted something that wasn’t just running because I don’t own a treadmill, I’m too cheap to buy a gym pass and I can’t always go running outside (you can’t simply take a toddler in a jogger outside in the freezing cold weather for a long run!).
For those of you that know me, I love the Insanity workout program. I wanted a good hybrid program of running and Insanity. Luckily, I found THIS great resource. I love when someone has already done the work of figuring it out and I can just do it! So if you are looking for an awesome Insanity-half marathon training schedule, this is the one! You can also use my Insanity-Half Marathon Hybrid Schedule pdf version (slightly modified), if you’d like. Just cross out the dates and insert whatever dates you will be training.
Now that I’m done with the half marathon, I need to find something else to keep me motivated. Perhaps I’ll find a fun marathon to train for, or maybe another Ragnar Relay…so many choices! For any of you local Utah peeps, what fun spring or summer races do you like? I need some recommendations – let me know in the comments!
