I couldn’t get enough of the Wild Blueberry action going on in my Wild Blueberry Mint Smoothie, so I just had to create another recipe featuring this gem of a fruit.
Wild Blueberries can be used in so many ways, but with the #WildYourSmoothie promotion going on right now, the focus is on – you guessed it – smoothies! Frozen fruit is a perfect ingredient for smoothies because since it is already frozen there is no need to add ice. And since I have an old school freezer, I don’t have an ice maker and I have no room for ice trays, so frozen fruit is all I’ve got to make these blended creations cold and the right consistency.
So onto my discussion of blueberries. If you already read my previous Wild Blueberry Mint Smoothie post, you can scroll down because most of this will be the same. If not, stick around to find out what makes Wild Blueberries so unique.
First off, it’s important to note that there are actually two kinds of blueberries – Wild Blueberries and regular cultivated blueberries. One of the most obvious differences is found in the name itself: Wild Blueberries are actually grown wild – meaning they are found naturally in fields called barrens in Maine and Eastern Canada that have been around for 10,000 years! They are genetically diverse with thousands of interlocking plants spreading naturally across the barrens.
Next up has to do with what happens when you bite into them. The flavor of Wild blueberries is more intense than regular blueberries. So you get more bang for your buck with each tiny Wild Blueberry. The growth and diversity of Wild Blueberries gives them this flavorful taste — just the right blend of sweet and tart.
Of course I wouldn’t be a dietitian if I didn’t mention the nutrition benefits. Wild Blueberries have twice the antioxidants than regular blueberries. They are also naturally low-fat and high in fiber. Research has shown Wild Blueberries may have health benefits for brain health, cancer, diabetes and gut health.
But isn’t fresh better than frozen, you ask? Not here! 99% of the Wild Blueberry crop is frozen within 24 hours of harvest. This locks in their nutrition and taste. So when you pick up a bag of frozen wild blueberries at your local grocery store, you are getting the same nutrition and flavor as if you picked them fresh off the plant yourself.
When I first thought to make a layered smoothie I was hesitant because I like easy to make and easy to clean up. In all actuality, making a layered smoothie isn’t that harder than making a regular one. Simply make the first layer, pour it into glasses, then rinse out the blender. Put the blender jar back onto the base and whip up your second layer. Pour it onto the top of your first layer and you’re done! It may take about 2 extra minutes, but doesn’t it look so pretty?! Definitely worth those 2 minutes.
